“Gum Bump” finds the players of Setting treating banjos, zithers, keyboards, and drums less like instruments than like lab equipment, each improviser stress-testing their gear’s outermost tonal limits with the focused curiosity of rovers mapping an unmapped planet. The results are terrestrial and alien at once, communal and isolating, sounds fizzling into silence the way a satellite signal slowly dissolves at the edge of range.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
