Stephen McCraven- Wooley the Newt
In a triumphant nod to avant-jazz's storied past, the British label Moved by Sound has meticulously restored Stephen McCraven's Wooley the Newt, a 1979 gem originally waxed on Marion Brown’s Sweet Earth imprint, where the master drummer (and father to contemporary maestro Makaya McCraven) pushed the boundaries of spiritual and modern jazz in a Paris studio. With original pressings now commanding a cool $500, this reissue showcases McCravens visionary rhythmic playing that landed him gigs with Archie Shepp and Mal Waldron during his career.
