Found in the liner notes of records by Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramsey Lewis, Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton, Muddy Waters, and sampled by many more in the hip-hop world, Stepney’s creative impact reached much further than his small basement studio where most of Step On Step originated. However, the raw and analog “baroque soul” heard on the collection is a depiction of a brilliant musical practitioner with an inextinguishable imagination for building a groove within any budget.
