Catholic Block- "A New Spring"

“A New Spring” is the new single from Catholic Block’s debut We Fail on Maple Death Records. At the helm is Mickey Tellarini from Maple Death juggernaut Qlowski who shifts focus to creating warmer, fragile bedroom pop under the new guise. The new track features a hand-drawn animated video created by the inimitable Irene Montemurro.

From Montemurro:

”I didn’t start with a clear plan or any sort of storyboard, I just started drawing and scanning as I was going along. Each clip I assembled and its interaction with the track inspired the next one coming, as I experimented with the possibilities of movement and rhythm that the previous clips almost accidentally had opened up for me. I had drawn a scheme of the major turning points in the songs but that was about it. You can definitely tell there’s an underlying sense of growth in how the animation is structured, and by the last minute I had reached a point where I felt comfortable enough with the medium to make a more openly narrative ‘“pisode.”

Apart from looking at Sienese painting, I rewatched a lot of anime openings to get inspiration for the movement and transitions, all very cheesy stuff from my childhood, from Sailor Moon and Creamy the Magic Angel to Doremi and Digimon and Tokyo Mew Mew and other Italian tv classics (there were looooads of Japanese anime in Italian tv as I was growing up).”
